Reverse osmosis always sends some water to the drain
A reverse osmosis (RO) system pushes your home's water against a semipermeable membrane. Clean water passes through and fills a storage tank. The dissolved minerals, salts, and contaminants the membrane holds back get rinsed away with a share of the incoming water. That rinse water goes by a few names: reject water, concentrate, or brine.
This happens by design. The steady rinse keeps trapped contaminants from building up on the membrane and ruining it. So an RO system does use more water than it delivers. The useful questions are how much more, what drives it, and whether that trade-off fits your home.
How much goes down the drain
There's no single figure, because the ratio of drain water to filtered water shifts with your water pressure, your water temperature, how many dissolved solids are in your supply, and the age of the membrane. A system running on strong pressure with fairly clean, room-temperature water sends far less to the drain than one fighting low pressure and heavily mineralized well water.
Manufacturers publish an efficiency rating for their systems, and testing programs such as NSF certify performance claims. If drain water matters to you, that certified rating is what to compare when you shop, rather than a rule of thumb you read online.
What pushes the waste up
A few conditions make an RO system flush more water than it needs to:
- Low household water pressure. RO relies on pressure to drive water through the membrane. When pressure is weak, more water bypasses the membrane and heads to the drain.
- Cold incoming water. Water filters more slowly when it's cold, so a system in an unheated basement or a cold climate can run less efficiently in winter.
- High dissolved-solids content. The dirtier or harder your source water, the more rinse water the membrane needs to stay clean.
- An aging or fouled membrane. As a membrane wears or clogs, the system works harder and wastes more. Skipped filter changes are a common culprit.
Ways to cut the waste
You don't have to accept the default. An installer can set up an RO system to run more efficiently:
- Add a permeate pump. This device uses the energy of the drain water itself to push more clean water into the tank, which can sharply reduce what gets thrown away. It needs no electricity.
- Fix low pressure. If your home's pressure is the problem, a booster pump gives the membrane the push it needs and lowers the drain ratio.
- Choose an efficiency-rated system. Newer designs are built to deliver more filtered water per gallon used. Ask your installer to compare certified efficiency, not just price.
- Reuse the reject water. The drain water isn't sewage. Many homeowners capture it for watering plants, cleaning, or flushing toilets. One caution: it carries a higher concentration of minerals and salts, so it isn't good for salt-sensitive plants.
- Keep up with filter changes. A clean pre-filter and a healthy membrane keep the whole system running the way it was designed to.
Put the waste in perspective
Whether the drain water is a real problem depends on how you use the system. If you install RO only at the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking, the amount you actually draw is small next to everything else your household runs through showers, laundry, and toilets. A point-of-use unit's rinse water is a modest slice of your total use.
The math changes if you're considering whole-house RO, which treats every drop entering the home and therefore rinses far more. Whole-house RO is a bigger commitment for a specific reason, such as very poor source water, and it's a decision worth talking through with a professional rather than defaulting to.
Two situations deserve extra thought. If your home is on a septic system, the steady flow of drain water adds to the load your septic field handles, so mention it to your installer. And if you pay for both water and sewer, the drain water shows up on both sides of the bill, which can tip the decision toward a more efficient system or a permeate pump.
When to bring in a professional
An installer does more than connect the unit. They can measure your incoming water pressure, test your source water to see how hard the membrane will have to work, and recommend a system whose efficiency rating suits your supply. They'll also set the drain connection correctly, since a poorly configured drain line can waste water or siphon back into the system.
If you already own an RO system and it seems to run constantly or send a lot to the drain, that's worth a service call. It often points to weak pressure, a tired membrane, or filters overdue for a change, all of which a technician can diagnose and fix.
Reverse osmosis gives you very clean drinking water at home, and the drain water is the trade-off that comes with it. With an efficient system, a permeate pump where it helps, and regular maintenance, most homeowners find that trade-off worth it for water they're happy to drink.
